“1901″ isn’t any different than “Hobo Humping Slobo Babe”.
Somebody gave a group of Intulectualls that don’t speack English a websters Dictionary and said make some records with this book as your guide. They both put out several Records overtime but will be forgoten by the masses soon enough. Listen to “We Care” and tell me it isn’t as good as “WolfGang Amadeus Phoenix”. As much as most people forgot about Whale after 1 major North American single the went on to be one of the first rock bands to work with Mos Def and the forgotten Shawn J. Period. If Tiesto had better Marketing his CD “Kelidiscope” would have been #1 everywhere and “Feel You In My Bones” would have toped this singles chart forsure.we can pretened we didn’t here 1901 in any comerials but the Masses won’t. This isn’t n*sync or New Kids on the Block, its a french band that the average person never heard of b4 last year. Thanks to Marketing. Would love to see this happen to something of “Let The Night Fall”.

what ruben said. look at animal collective (which i voted for). it is one thing when something wins many polls but when something wins EVERY poll? they are getting better at manipulating our tastes. who are ‘they’? well that is the question isnt it.

i think the crucial thing is that it’s *not* about one person’s taste, like the bar example. it is, as pointed out, a question of “mass taste,” which means that there is something that’s making all of these people (me included) like the same thing. when you start dealing with numbers like this, you’re looking at a social phenomenon, and then it becomes important to see what’s up. why? because i want to know why something that *should* be about personal preference (like in the bar…) becomes something more general. here’s a better bar example: twenty guys are in a bar with twenty girls. nineteen of the guys like this one girl. something is wrong with this scenario, no? other forces must be at play. if i’m one of those nineteen, i want to know who’s tampering with my consciousness and making me like the same girl everyone else likes. right?

The “why analyze it?” school drives me bananapants. They aren’t wrong. I know this. It’s still the equivelent of the girl at the bar who tells you to smile more. I don’t want to fucking smile, and I like to think about stuff. It’s interesting. It’s fun.
Tris, your affection for Tom Lehrer fills my heart with princess like joy.
Violent Bullshit, a fine, fine band that motherfuckers should get down with, have an anti-Obama song called Keep The Change. When I gave the singer,Jayson, grief about it, he said “liking your President is like really loving the police”. I like both, but I could see where the dude was coming from. And, to tie it back into the whole Phoenix thing, I need a viewpoint, even one I don’t agree with. If I want cute purring, I’ll get a cat.
